Our diverse energy portfolio reflects our commitment to reliable, cost-effective power for District customers. The District’s power supply combines resources from regional markets, federal hydroelectric systems, and our own local generation facilities. This balanced approach ensures we can meet customer needs while maintaining competitive rates and supporting grid reliability throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Regional Power Partnership
As a preference customer of the Bonneville Power Administration, we benefit from access to one of the nation’s most extensive clean energy networks. BPA markets power from 31 federal hydroelectric projects across the Pacific Northwest, the Columbia Generating Station nuclear facility, and various smaller regional generators. This Federal Columbia River Power System serves as our primary power source for residential and commercial customers.
The combination of our local hydroelectric generation and BPA’s diverse resource portfolio ensures that nearly all electricity consumed by PUD residential and commercial customers comes from renewable or non-fossil fuel sources. This partnership provides both environmental benefits and rate stability for our community.
Our Hydroelectric Facilities
Northern Wasco County PUD owns and operates two innovative small hydroelectric projects on the Columbia River, designed to generate clean energy while protecting fish populations. These facilities demonstrate how renewable energy production can work in harmony with environmental stewardship.
The Dalles North Fishway Hydroelectric Project
Since beginning commercial operation in May 1991, this pioneering 5-megawatt facility has set the standard for environmentally responsible hydroelectric generation. Located at The Dalles Dam’s north fish ladder, the project utilizes attraction water flow that would otherwise be unused, creating electricity without impacting the dam’s primary fish passage function.
Advanced screening technology prevents juvenile salmon and other small fish from entering the turbine, earning the project Low Impact Hydroelectric Institute certification and qualifying it for Renewable Energy Credits. This fish-friendly design allows the facility to generate clean power equivalent to serving approximately 4,000 homes annually.
Currently, power from The Dalles Fishway is sold to regional energy markets, with revenues directly benefiting our customers through reduced electric rates.
McNary Dam Washington Shore Fishway Project
Operational since October 1997, our McNary facility represents the next evolution in fish-friendly hydroelectric design. This 10-megawatt generator, located on McNary Dam’s north-shore fish ladder near Umatilla, Oregon, operates through a partnership with Klickitat County PUD.
The project’s innovative intake design draws water from 80 feet below the surface, utilizing the natural fish ladder flow for power generation. Northern Wasco County PUD receives half of the facility’s output, which is transmitted to The Dalles to serve local utility customers. The McNary plant generates sufficient electricity to power approximately 3,800 homes each year.
