At Northern Wasco County People’s Utility District, our mission goes beyond delivering reliable power at affordable prices. We strive to enhance the lives of our neighbors and build a stronger community.
As a consumer-owned utility, NWCPUD embodies a model that puts people first, ensuring our services reflect the unique needs and aspirations of The Dalles and our Wasco County community. Unlike investor-owned utilities—which prioritize profits—not-for-profit, consumer-owned utilities focus on serving the community’s best interests, leading to numerous advantages.
A Community-Centric Approach
Consumer-owned utilities are defined by their deep-rooted commitment to serving local residents rather than distant shareholders. NWCPUD is a prime example of this model in action.
Established in 1939 and first delivering power in 1949, NWCPUD was created to provide reliable and affordable electrical service to previously underserved rural areas in Wasco County. From the beginning, we have been governed by a board of local community members, ensuring decisions reflect the community’s needs and priorities. Five directors comprise your Northern Wasco County PUD Board of Directors, each serving a different subdivision.
Our local governance model means every decision, from infrastructure investments to customer service improvements, is driven by individuals who live and work in local communities. Our board’s firsthand knowledge of the community enables us to tailor our services and operations to better meet your needs, making sure we remain accountable to the people we serve.
Economic Advantages for Our Community
1 of the most compelling advantages of consumer-owned utilities is their economic impact on local communities. NWCPUD’s model focuses on providing affordable rates and reinvesting revenue back into the community.
Unlike investor-owned utilities, which must generate profits for shareholders, NWCPUD directs any surplus back into our local area. This approach not only helps keep utility rates stable and affordable but also ensures any extra funds are used for enhancing services and supporting community projects.
When you pay your utility bill, your money stays within Wasco County, fostering local economic growth. Our investments support local businesses, create jobs, and contribute to the overall economic vitality of our region. As part of a consumer-owned utility, you help keep our local economy strong and resilient.
Superior Customer Service
At NWCPUD, we believe outstanding customer service is a cornerstone of our commitment to you. Being a community-focused utility, we pride ourselves on offering personalized and responsive service. Our staff and board members are dedicated to ensuring your experience with us is as positive and efficient as possible.
Our approach to customer service is rooted in our understanding of the unique needs of Northern Wasco County residents. This local focus allows us to address concerns swiftly and effectively, providing a level of service that goes beyond mere transactions. We are here to support you, answer your questions, and ensure your needs are met with care and attention.
Leading the Way in Sustainability
Sustainability is more than a buzzword at NWCPUD; it is a core value that guides our operations and decisions. Our commitment to environmental stewardship is evident in our investments in renewable energy and energy-efficiency programs. By prioritizing sustainable practices, we reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to a healthier planet.
Our initiatives include adopting renewable energy sources and promoting energy-saving measures that benefit both our community and the environment. As a consumer-owned utility, we have the flexibility to focus on long-term environmental goals rather than short-term profits. This approach ensures we are not only meeting today’s energy needs but also preparing for a sustainable future.
Resilience Through Local Control
One of the key advantages of consumer-owned utilities like NWCPUD is our enhanced resilience and ability to respond effectively to emergencies. Our local governance allows us to act swiftly and decisively when challenges arise, whether it’s a power outage, severe weather, or other disruptions.
Because we are deeply rooted in the Wasco County community, we can mobilize resources and address issues with a speed and efficiency that larger, distant utilities often cannot match. Our staff, who live in the same areas we serve, have a firsthand understanding of the unique needs and conditions of our community. This proximity enables us to provide rapid response and support when it is most needed.
In times of crisis, having a utility that is integrated into the fabric of the community makes a significant difference. NWCPUD’s local control means we can make quick decisions and deploy personnel and equipment effectively, minimizing downtime and ensuring services are restored as swiftly as possible. Our approach ensures that, during emergencies, you receive timely and effective assistance from a utility that is as invested in your well-being as you are.
Fostering Stronger Community Ties
Beyond providing electricity, NWCPUD is dedicated to strengthening the social fabric of Northern Wasco County. Our involvement in local events, support for charitable causes, and participation in community-building activities reflect our commitment to making a positive impact beyond utility services.
By sponsoring events and supporting local initiatives, we aim to create a sense of unity and shared purpose within our community. Our role extends beyond being a utility provider. We are a partner in building a vibrant, connected, and thriving community.
Northern Wasco County People’s Utility District exemplifies the many benefits of consumer-owned utilities. By focusing on local control, economic benefits, exceptional customer service, sustainability, and community engagement, we demonstrate the positive impact of a utility model that puts people first. As we continue to serve and support The Dalles and Wasco County, we remain dedicated to enhancing our community and ensuring a bright and sustainable future for all. Thank you for being a part of this mission with us.
