Net Metering

What is Net Metering?

Net metering is a billing arrangement that allows customers with qualifying electric generation systems to receive credit for excess electricity they produce and feed back into the electric grid. When your solar panels, wind turbine, or other renewable energy system generates more electricity than your home or business uses, the excess power flows back to the utility grid, and your electric meter literally runs backward, giving you credit for the power you’ve contributed.

During periods when your system produces less electricity than you need (such as at night or on cloudy days), you draw power from the grid as usual. At the end of each billing period, you’re charged only for the “net” amount of electricity you used from the grid, minus any credits you earned from excess generation.

Qualifying Generation Systems

NWCPUD accepts net metering applications for electric generation facilities that use:

• Solar power
• Wind power
• Fuel cell technology
• Hydroelectric power
• Other qualifying technologies (such as batteries, etc.)

Special Net Metering Rates

NWCPUD offers special tariff rates for customers who have their own generation systems and have entered into a net metering agreement with us. These rates are designed to fairly compensate customers for the clean energy they contribute to our electric grid while maintaining system reliability and cost-effectiveness for all customers.

Net Metering Application Process

Getting started with net metering is straightforward:

1. Submit Your Application

Complete and submit the net metering application form below. Important: Applications must be submitted by the customer/property owner only – applications submitted by contractors or third parties will be denied. This initial form captures basic information about your proposed generation system and property.

2. Staff Review and Contact

After receiving your application, an NWCPUD staff member will reach out to you to discuss next steps and gather additional information about your project. They’ll guide you through the specific requirements and answer any questions you may have.

3. Documentation and Approval

Throughout the process, you’ll need to submit various documents to move your application forward. These may include:

• Electrical system specifications and drawings
• Equipment certifications
• Contractor licenses and permits
• Interconnection study results (if required)
• Insurance documentation

Our staff will provide you with a detailed checklist of required documents based on your specific installation.
